- The death of ALMOST any chip in the C64 would cause the symptoms you
- describe. Among the few that could not (according to the Commodore
- Diagnostician) are the VIC chip and the SID chip. This is very much
- to your benefit, because in a properly functioning C64, these two chips
- are the ones that run the hottest. (6567 and 6581 are the part #s).
- In most cases, a defective chip will get hotter than it should. Open
- up the case and let the chips cook for a few minutes. If you find one
- or more that are hotter than the VIC and SID chips, they are almost
- certainly your culprits.

- And if I use my 64 is there a way to transfer EMAILed files from my
- PC to the 64???
-
- At my present primitive state of communication between these computers,
- I do this by saving the e-mail file to a MS-DOS disk and then
- converting it to a C64-readable disk using Big Blue Reader. If you
- don't have BBR, and eventually plan to connect the two computers using
- one of the many cable-based communication systems, you might try one
- of these programs in the interim. Both are in the files of
- ccnga.uwaterloo.ca. The first is MSDOSCOPY. This program is
- reasonably fast, but only converts one way - MSDOS -> C64.
- The other program is MSDOS64. This converts both ways, but is
- painfully slow. The first requires a 1581. The second requires either
- a 1581 or a 1571. So does BBR, BTW.
